Raw Feeding
Raw feeding for dogs is a something that I, as a dog owner and breeder, am a huge advocate for. Unlike commercially prepared and processed dog food, raw feeding involves giving your dog uncooked meats, bones, and organs as their main source of sustenance.
A common recommendation is the 80/10/10 ratio
-
80% Muscle Meat: This provides the primary source of protein and essential nutrients necessary for a dog's daily activities and overall health.
-
10% Raw Edible Bone: These are a natural source of calcium and phosphorus, important for strong bones and teeth.
-
10% Organs: Half of which should be liver, are rich in vitamins and minerals that support various bodily functions from detoxification to digestion.
This combination aims to mimic the prey diet, dogs would have consumed in the wild and provide a holistic balance of nutrients. You can then add a few extra veggies, fruits and other bits and bobs as you like for an extra nutritional boost, but they are not truly necessary.
There are several benefits to raw feeding for dogs. First and foremost, it mimics the diet of their wild ancestors, who mainly ate raw meat and bones. This means that raw feeding provides a more natural and biologically appropriate diet for dogs, which can lead to a host of health benefits.
-
Better Dental Health: The act of gnawing on raw bones can help to remove tartar and plaque build-up, leading to healthier teeth and gums.
-
Enhanced Digestive Function: A diet that includes raw meat and organs may be easier for dogs to digest, thereby improving nutrient absorption and leading to healthier stools. Truly, raw fed dog poos are so much easier to deal with and much less smelly than kibble poo. Trust me, I clean up a LOT of them :)
-
Healthier Skin and Coat: Many raw feeders report that their dogs have softer, shinier coats and fewer skin issues when on a raw diet.
-
Increased Energy Levels: The natural and unprocessed nature of the food can contribute to higher energy levels and better overall vitality. (There are some times I wish mine would have a little less vitality...not really)
-
Weight Management: Proper portions of raw food can help in maintaining an ideal weight for dogs, avoiding obesity, and related health issues.
